Imagine a semester in which you study just one topic -- but from several points of view. You travel, hike, camp, read, debate, listen, all the while trying to absorb as much as you can about the topic. You're guided by several professors from different fields, each providing another piece of the puzzle. By the end, you're exhausted, but you'll have a better understanding of that subject than the vast majority of people. More importantly, you'll have an even better understanding of how to learn about complex issues.
Block courses are a signature of the GMC curriculum. They bring multiple professors together to teach one group of students, in a multi-credit course focused on a timely (and usually contentious) issue involving the environment or a natural community, in the region or abroad. Block courses provide an innovative way at looking in-depth at problems, providing deep knowledge and personal connections that students carry with them into their post-graduate careers.
