Learn How to Think,
Not What to Think

High-quality teaching focused on you
Our classes are small and our setting intimate. That means that you won’t get away with blending into the background in any course. Faculty and other students will challenge you to step out of your bubble, to think new thoughts, hold opinions and defend them. It’s the kind of setting that will make you a skilled and knowledgeable talker and a natural leader in any mix of people.

Learn the most by having an unforgettable experience
It could be helping a Vermont nonprofit untangle its financial records. Or shooting a film about the oral history of the Slate Valley. Or working on rural poverty. Whatever it is, students learn more because they’re in the field doing something good. That’s why more than half of our faculty in any given semester integrate it – service learning – into their coursework.

Check your ego at the door
Faculty and students are fiercely dedicated to the environmental mission, and that leaves little room for ego. Faculty frequently collaborate on research and teaching projects, like block courses and service learning projects. And learning – not personal prestige – are the highest goals.
