Jasmine Star Peters '02
Lecturer, SUNY College at Cortland, N.Y.
Florida Atlantic University, M.S., Biological Sciences
Major: Biology
Hometown: Keuka Lake, N.Y.
Description of work: I teach three botanically-oriented biology labs.
How I got started: I took an AmeriCorps internship for the National Park Service and spent a few months teaching marine science in Maryland. I started teaching college science labs as a graduate student, and then worked for the City of Boca Raton, FL, at a nature center, teaching marine science and natural history for K-12 and public programs. SUNY Cortland was looking for someone with an M.S. and a background in plant biology and my resume fit the bill.
Most important thing I learned at GMC: GMC taught me how to learn, and that my education would be what I made of it. At GMC I developed the academic standards and expectations that I hold myself, and my students and colleagues to.
Sports/activities while at GMC: DEEP (Demonstrated Excellence in Environmental Practice) Scholars group
Advice to students: Education is all about what you make of it. Take responsibility for your academic career and expect the best from yourself and your school. Apply for every scholarship and travel every chance you get, get to know your professors, do an independent research project. Don't be afraid to take on responsibilities outside your comfort zone. No matter what you are doing, do it brilliantly.
