PSYCHOLOGY
Hometown: Santa Ana, California
Favorite course to teach: Social psychology
Interests/hobbies: Hiking, reading and cooking
Toughest class I took in college: An engineering course in statics--I hated it.
What "the environment" means to me: The physical, social and spiritual world in which we live. If we took the time to respect the earth, each other and ourselves, I think the world would be a much better place.
Research interests: There is very little that I am not interested in, but my most productive line of research involves the influence of hormones on our personality. I am currently working on what it means when our self-views and our hormonal markers of personality are in conflict.
Best concert I've seen: My favorite band is Weezer, but I'm going to have to say that the best concert I ever saw was Ween at the Showbox in Seattle.
Recommended movie: "Love Actually" (it's always better than I remember it being), "Lost in Translation", "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind", and "Jane Eyre" (the one with Joan Fontaine and Orson Wells).
Book I recently enjoyed: "The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay"; but most recently I just reread "Northanger Abbey" (I'm rekindling an obsession with Jane Austen at the moment).
Best place I've traveled to: My favorite place to travel is hiking in the Sierras.
Favorite research project with a student: I did a research project a while back with a student who played the role of a confederate in our study. It was his job to make the research participant feel either dominant or submissive. To do this, he played the role of either a math genius or a math failure. It was fun to see this former student, who is one of the most considerate and thoughtful people I have ever met, telling someone else how much smarter he was and how he was going to "whip him on this intelligence test." He was so good at being a complete jerk! It was funny to watch, but only because I knew he would never act like that in real life.
