FAQ: Residence Life

Is housing guaranteed?
Yes, housing is guaranteed all four years for all students.

Can I choose my roommate?
Green Mountain assigns first-year student roommates based on a questionnaire you fill out that asks your preferences on things like study habits, sleep patterns, neatness, and noise. In most cases, the room assignments will place you with someone who is compatible. If you have a friend from home and you both agree you want to live together, please let us know and we'll assign you together. After your first year, you can choose your roommate. Housing is determined on a first-come, first-served basis. Don't worry, though - in rare cases where roommates find that they have major differences and have a very difficult time getting along, the Residence Life office will do its best to move you or switch roommates. Many students, however, find that they become great, lifelong friends with their roommate.

How will I know if my computer is compatible?
New students are encouraged to bring their own computer -- laptops are recommended. Our campus supports both Windows-based PC and Apple computers. For details about whether or not your computer is compatible with our network, consult the Information Technology Services website.

Is Green Mountain College safe?
The college campus and the town of Poultney are very safe. Trained security professionals are on call and on patrol 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. However, students are encouraged to follow basic common sense safety procedures in their daily routines. For more information on campus safety, visit our Campus Security web site.

Are there quiet floors or academic floors?
Yes, students can request to live on one of three Quiet floors or the Substance Free floor. All residence halls are smoke-free. The residence halls are home to a variety of tight-knit communities of people with similar lifestyle preferences. There are traditional single-sex floors, as well as co-educational theme floors, including a floor designated for students in the Honors Program, a Creative Arts Living floor, an Adventure Recreation floor, and a Sustainable Living floor.

Do you allow cars on campus?
Yes. Parking on campus is free and available to all students as long as the vehicle is registered and insured in the student's home state, and registered with the Office of Campus Security.
