Tibursious Nsambu Ssendawula (a.k.a. "Teep")

Meet Some Of Our International Students

Home country: Uganda (The parlor of Africa!)

Major: Biology and Developmental Politics

Minors: Chemistry and Mathematics

Why did you choose GMC?
When I came for an interview, everyone was so friendly to me. Everyone from the admissions staff to the faculty whose classes I attended during my visit seemed very nice. I felt very comfortable as though I had known them for years!

What do you miss most about home?
I miss certain dishes such as Matooke, but hey I am enjoying the American variety of dishes especially here at the college. I see my family every summer. The events here at the college and US in general occupy my time so that I tend not to get too homesick.

Describe your hometown in 5 words or less: The most joyful place in the world.

Most interesting US experience?
Well, I have experienced lots interesting moments, but since this question is very specific, I will say seeing snow the first time and actually being good at snowboarding, is among the exciting events so far done.

Contributions to GMC:
I have spoken to students in the area schools about making a difference in their lives. I have on several occasions been asked by locals schools here to talk about Uganda and Africa in general on various aspects from day to day life, education, and politics. I am also involved in the Mentoring Program at the college, where we are assigned mentees from the area elementary school. I am currently a soccer captain and play tennis for the college. I am involved in clubs where we do fundraising for different purposes such as collecting food for the Poultney Food Shelf. I also started a project for sponsoring the most needy kids in Uganda to attend school with the help of Mr. Richard Larson and Green Mountain College fellow students. Please for more information visit www.uganda-nkukechildrenseducationproject.org.

Describe what you find most unique about GMC
I find GMC unique from the kitchen staff to the professors. Highly educated professors but down to earth. Most of my professors are like fellow students while outside the classroom. They will be there to help you with almost anything from academics to whatever...you will never get lost. I can't mention enough about students because everyone I've met is awesome.

What piece of advice can you give to prospective international students?
Come to GMC or USA open-minded and don't be shy. If you are shy, we will help you, because you don't need to be. I wish you good luck.
