Striving to protect the environment
It may be early in the presidential campaign, but Brett Dugan wants you to know about the candidates. In a regular series of email public service announcements, the GMC sophomore launched an all-out public information campaign this semester to help the campus community understand where various announced candidates stand on a variety of issues, from energy to the environment to Social Security and Healthcare. In his desire to protect the interests of people and the environment, Brett clearly recognizes the importance of building public awareness.

An Environmental Studies major with a focus in Human Sciences, Policy and the Environment, Brett has been interested in the natural world since he was a child, but he has puzzled over how to make this interest into a viable major. After being advised by friends and mentors back home in Stonington, CT that he would make a good lawyer (advice he took as a compliment), he did some research into the subject. “At that point, I had no idea that there were environmental lawyers,” says Brett. “Once I learned more about it, it seemed like a challenging education that would enable me to create visible changes within my lifetime and to give back to nature in a sense.”

Brett is now a member of the GMC Pre-Law Program as well as the President of the Pre-Law club, and he has his sites set on the environmentally-focused Vermont Law School after he earns his GMC degree. Eventually, he hopes to travel across the country to use his talents to help protect the environment as well as the rights of those who are affected by environmental injustices. “I’d like to come in and represent those who really need it for a low fee. After all, I don’t want to live my life just for myself, I want to live it for other people,” he says.

Brett is also the Vice-President of the Honors Club, a member of the Judicial Board, and served a research assistantship for Provost Bill Throop, for which he looked into sustainable urban development and the cultivation of values in higher education.
