Wyoming Native learns about living and farming sustainably

Corinna Lowe's sweet smile may draw you in, but when she wields a yoke, all 3,000 lbs. of Bill and Lou (the college oxen) bend to her will. When she came to GMC, Corinna dove right into farm life, doing chores even before classes started. Now she has a work-study job at the farm (though she admits she would probably do it for free).

"There's no better way to start the day-interacting with nature and watching the animals interact with each other," she says. A native of Mountain View, Wyoming, Corinna is no stranger to farm work, but she definitely is far from home. "I haven't seen any oxen in Wyoming."

From an early age, Corinna knew she wanted to help people and seriously considered the field of nursing. A few summers ago she worked at a nursing home, and even entered a nursing program at a state university in North Dakota. However, after two years, she decided that she was unsatisfied with the approach of western medicine and began searching for something else.

She stumbled on Green Mountain College. "A year ago, I didn't know environmental studies existed as a major!" she says. She transferred this fall, and is now an environmental studies major with a concentration in sustainable agriculture. "It has so much correlation to my home, where everyone is a rancher. It's interesting to see it done sustainably. Environmental studies goes right to my values about what I consume," she said, referring to her veganism.

The farm and her studies keep her busy, but Corinna also finds time to serve as secretary of the Youth Energy Squad (YES). She is currently working on a project to install more energy-efficient light bulbs in the dining hall. "I came here because there is such a wide range of opportunities to get involved in-yoga, acupuncture. I'll pick up other activities as I can."

After college, Corinna sees herself working for a non-profit organization or volunteering overseas. "Helping people was one of the reasons I wanted to be a nurse. Now I've discovered I can help people in other ways."
