Gerry Audet '08

Perseverance and an uncanny fascination with bugs leads to discovery of new species in Vt.

When it comes to science, Gerry has an amazing knack for explaining complex concepts in an understandable way. An honors student and biology major from Fairfax, Vermont, he says, "My whole life, I knew I was going to be a science major. When I was two years old I liked bugs. Sometimes I'm jealous of people that don't know what they want to do, but I did my exploring when I was young."

An Undergraduate Research Assistant for biology professor Mike Blust, Gerry's dragonfly research leads him down to the Poultney River to collect samples, which he then identifies back in the lab. So far, his findings have brought him to the discovery of two species of dragonflies that have never been identified in Vermont. Research also brings Gerry to other parts of Vermont, where he is exploring the link between climate change and the many species of animals moving farther north. He is particularly observing birds that are native to more southern states, but now being found in Vermont.

But Gerry doesn't spend all his time behind binoculars or a microscope. He is also on the Student Athletic Advisory Committee, captain of the cross-country team, treasurer of the Ultimate Frisbee club, and he has completed seven triathlons. Gerry is interested in pursuing a teaching career that would give him the opportunity to coach as well.

Coming from a high school class of only 67 students, Gerry was drawn to GMC's small size. He was also attracted to the unique recreation program. Complementing his biology major, Gerry has minors in chemistry and recreation. He plans on spending a semester in Alaska through the Eco-League. "I've never been further west than Cincinnati," he says, "so I definitely want to try something new."

Gerry plans to attend graduate school with his eye on a Ph.D., and then possibly teach science at the college level. Gerry occasionally likes to reminisce about earlier career aspirations, "When I was seven, I explored the option of being on a swat team. But, no, I like science."
