The Facts
Green Mountain College is a coeducational, private, liberal arts college founded
in 1834 by the Methodist Church. We take the environment as a unifying theme
underlying the College’s academic and co-curricular programs. GMC is a tight-knit
campus community of 760 students, most of whom live on campus. Average class
size is about 15 students. Students come from 39 states and 14 foreign countries.
Location
Poultney, Vermont, is an historic rural town located in the heart of southern
Vermont’s beautiful lakes district. The College is in the midst of some of New
England’s richest outdoor recreation and a short drive from excellent cultural
and shopping areas.
Majors
GMC offers 25 majors and 24 minors in traditional liberal arts and pre-professional
programs. Most popular majors include Environmental Studies, Adventure Recreation,
Education, Psychology, Resort Management, Business, and Fine Art. Students interested
in self-directed study may apply to the Progressive Education Program.

Campus
Green Mountain has one of the most beautiful small college campuses in the country,
dominated by classic Georgian architecture and tall gracious maple trees. The
155-acre main campus features athletic fields, a farm with garden and livestock,
a ropes course, hiking trails, and a great swimming hole on the Poultney River.
Campus Environmental Initiatives
In 2007, Green Mountain College won Campus Sustainability Leadership Award in the "Under a 1,000"
category from the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE). The award
recognizes Green Mountain for outstanding commitment to sustainability in their governance and administration,
curriculum and research, operations, campus culture, and community outreach.
Green Mountain was the first college in United States to
be named EPA Energy Star Showcase Campus following campus-wide retrofitting
of light fixtures.

Change-A-Light campaign.
Green Mountain College is the first campus in the country
to get more than half of its electricity from “Cow Power,” a renewable energy
program provided by the local utility company, which generates electricity
from Vermont dairy farm manure.
The College has low-flush toilets and low-flow shower heads,
and remote-controlled thermostats throughout campus to improve heating efficiency.
Students have installed a wind turbine to power the campus
green house and solar panel on the roof of the student center.
All waste from the dining hall is composted and returned
to the college farm.
GMC has an extensive recycling program with a paid crew of
student recycling workers.
Athletics
GMC competes in NCAA Division III. Seven men’s teams and seven women’s, including
basketball, cross country, golf, lacrosse, skiing, soccer, softball, tennis,
and volleyball. Club sports include men and women’s rugby and Ultimate Frisbee.
