Scholarship Opportunities
Green Mountain College offers a wide range of scholarship and grants awarded based on merit and demonstrated financial need. All of GMC's grants and scholarships are awarded for up to 4 years or 8 semesters. For scholarships and/or grants to be renewed each year, one must always maintain full-time enrollment and continue to make satisfactory academic progress. Certain scholarships and grants have additional requirements and deadlines. See below.

MAKE A DIFFERENCE SCHOLARSHIP
Program: Make A Difference Scholarship
Eligibility: Awarded to people who have made a difference in the life of another person and/or their community and wish to continue their education. Applicants must present a portfolio that illustrates how they've made a difference in their communities, in the life of an individual, or for some other reason.
Award Amount: Winners are awarded full tuition, room, board, and fees for up to four years.
How to Apply: Submit Make A Difference nomination and application available here: Make A Difference website.
Deadline: Make A Difference Application must be received by 1/2.
Restrictions: The Make A Difference scholarship is a highly competitive scholarship, with up to three scholarships awarded annually. Only students applying for Fall admission are eligible.
ACADEMIC MERIT SCHOLARSHIPS
Program: Freshman First Year Scholarships
Eligibility: Applicants whose academic credentials place them at the top of the applicant pool.
Award Amount: Ranges in amount up to full-tuition.
How to Apply: GMC considers standardized test scores or the insight portfolio along with GPA and class rank.
Deadline: Freshman First Year Scholarships are awarded on a rolling basis.
How to Maintain: Renewable for three years providing the student maintains an appropriate cumulative GPA.
Program: Phi Theta Kappa Transfer Scholarship
Eligibility: Awarded to students who are members of Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society. Students must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 and above and completed at least 24 credit hours.
Award Amount: Students with a GPA between 3.00 and 3.49 are awarded up to $5,000 and students with a GPA of 3.5 above are awarded up to $7,000.
How to Apply: Must submit transcript from previous school.
Deadline: Phi Theta Kappa scholarships are awarded on a rolling basis.
How to Maintain: Must maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.0
Program: Transfer Student Scholarship
Eligibility: Awarded to applicants with at least a 2.75 GPA who have completed 24 credit hours.
Award Amount: Varies up to $4,000.
How to Apply: Must submit transcript from previous school.
Deadline: Transfer scholarships are awarded on a rolling basis.
How to Maintain: Must maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.75
SPECIAL MERIT SCHOLARSHIPS
Program: GMC Community Service Scholarship
Eligibility: Awarded on the basis of past and current participation in community service based on the admissions application.
Award Amount: Varies up to $6,000 per year.
How to Apply: Submit a detailed resume of community service experience with application.
Deadline: Community Service scholarships are awarded on a rolling basis.
Program: Visual & Performing Arts Scholarship
Eligibility: Offered to students who demonstrate superior talent in visual & performing arts.
Award Amount: Ranges in amount up to $5,000.
How to Apply: Submit a portfolio of work with application. Appropriate portfolios include prints, slides, DVDs, CDs, cassettes, etc.
Deadline: Portfolio must be received by 2/1.
Program: Demonstrated Excellence in Environmental Practices Scholarship
Eligibility: Offered to students who demonstrate excellence in environmental practices.
Award Amount: Ranges in amount up to $5,000.
How to Apply: Submit a detailed resume of experience with the environment with application, as well as letters of recommendation and a personal statement that speak to the applicant's commitment to the environment.
Deadline: Application must be received by 2/1.
Program: GMC Legacy Grant
Eligibility: Offered to incoming students who have a sibling who has attended or is attending GMC or have had a parent or grandparent attend in the past; not based on need or merit.
Award Amount: $2,500 awarded each year.
How to Apply: Must list GMC relatives on application.
Deadline: Legacy Grants are awarded to all eligible applicants.
NEED-BASED GRANTS
Program: GMC Need-based Grant, Resort & Hospitality Need-based Grant
Eligibility: Based on demonstrated financial need.
Award Amount: May range from $1,000 to $20,000.
How to Apply: Must file the FAFSA and GMC Financial Aid Application.
Deadline: Need-based grants are awarded to all eligible applicants.
FEDERAL FINANCIAL AID PROGRAMS
Program: Academic Competitiveness Grant
Eligibility: Naturally born U.S. Citizen, pursing first bachelor's degree, Pell Recipient, first-year student graduating high school May 2007 or second-year student graduated high school May 2006. Must have completed a rigorous couse of secondary school study. Second-year students must have a cumulative 3.0 GPA
Award Amount: First-year: $750, Second-year: $1,300
How To Apply: FAFSA must be filed.
Program: National Science and Mathematics Access to Retain Talent Grant (SMART Grant)
Eligibility: Naturally born U.S. Citizen, Pell Recipient, third-year and fourth-year students only. Students must be majoring in certain areas of life science, mathematics, technology, or certain foreign languages. Must maintain a cumulative 3.0 GPA.
Award Amount: $4,000 per year
How To Apply: FAFSA must be filed.
Program: Federal Pell Grants
Eligibility: US Citizen (or permanent resident), pursuing first bachelor's degree, admitted academic year (and subsequently enrolled), must demonstrate high financial need as determined by the FAFSA.
Award Amount: Varies up to $4,050.
How to Apply: FAFSA must be filed.
Program: Federal Supplemental Education Opportunity Grants
Eligibility: US Citizen (or permanent resident), pursuing first bachelor's degree, admitted academic year (and subsequently enrolled), must demonstrate high financial need as determined by the FAFSA.
Award Amount: Amounts vary depending on level of financial need and funding availability.
How to Apply: FAFSA must be filed.
Program: Federal Stafford Loans
Eligibility:
U.S. Citizen (or permanent resident) admitted (and subsequently enrolled), subsidized loans are determined by FAFSA results and financial need; unsubsidized loans are available when need not demonstrated.
Award Amount: First-year: $3,500
Sophomores: $4,500
Juniors/Seniors: $5,500
How to Apply: Obtain PLUS application from the GMC Financial Aid office.
Program: Federal Parent Loan for Undergraduate Students (PLUS)
Eligibility: Parent of a dependent student who is enrolled at least half time.
Award Amount: Parents may borrow up to the cost of attendance minus any other financial aid.
How to Apply: Obtain PLUS application from the GMC Financial Aid office. FAFSA must be filed.
STATE FINANCIAL AID PROGRAMS
Program: Vermont Student Assistance Corporation
Eligibility: Must be a resident of Vermont for at least one year.
Award Amount: Varies up to $9,800.
How to Apply: FAFSA must be filed. Submit VSAC application, available in the GMC Financial Aid office, to VSAC.
Program: Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Pennsylvania & Rhode Island
Eligibility: Available to residents of these states attending a school in Vermont.
Award Amount: Varies by state.
How to Apply: Submit application from state-specific scholarship organization.
CAMPUS EMPLOYMENT
Program: Federal and Campus Employment
Eligibility: Awarded to students based on need.
Award Amount:
Estimated to earn $1,500 ($750 per semester).
How to Apply: FAFSA must be filed.
Program: Resort & Hospitality Management Co-op
Eligibility: Awarded to students who are enrolled in the Resort & Hospitality Management Program and participate in a Winter or Summer Co-op.
Award Amount: Estimated to earn $3800.

OTHER OPTIONS
Program: Payment through Key Bank
Eligibility: Available for all enrolled students.
Award Amount: Interest-free with a participation fee; amounts may vary and are budgeted over 10 months.
How to Apply: Applications are available from the GMC Financial Aid Office.
Program: Private Loans, Ex: Advantage Loan & Key Alternative
Eligibility: Available for all enrolled students.
Award Amount:
Students may borrow up to the cost of attendance minus other aid.
